The National Hurricane Center says it's too soon to predict what effect Hurricane Earl will have on the U.S.
Forecasters say that the Category 4 storm will at least kick up dangerous rip currents. Earl could brush the East Coast but forecsters say a slight change in direction could bring landfall.
Coastal residents from North Carolina to Maine are being urged to monitor storm reports closely.
Earlier, the storm battered the northeastern Caribbean, but there are no reports of casualties.
